FLORES TOUR ITINERARY
Day 1. Labuan Bajo – Ruteng (+/- 135 KM). Around 5-hrs Driving
Your Flores adventure begins this morning.
Our friendly tour guide and driver will pick you up directly from your accommodation in Labuan Bajo, whether you are staying at a hotel, guesthouse, or arriving from the harbor. You will be welcomed with a warm smile and assisted with your luggage before settling into a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle.
From Labuan Bajo, we will begin our journey eastward toward Ruteng, the capital of Manggarai Regency in the highlands of Flores. The drive takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, but do not worry, it will not feel long. Along the way, we will make several stops at beautiful viewpoints where you are invited to step out, stretch your legs, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and capture the stunning natural beauty of Flores with your camera.
One of our first special stops is Cara Village, located in the Cancar area. Here, you will witness one of the most unique and iconic tourism sights in all of Flores, the extraordinary Lodok Spider Web Rice Fields. From a distance, the rice fields appear to be woven like a giant spider’s web. This ancient agricultural system, passed down through generations of the Manggarai people, is not only beautiful but also culturally significant.
The fields are divided in a circular pattern, radiating outward like spokes on a wheel. It is a sight you will not find anywhere else in Indonesia. You are invited to take your time here, to photograph, to observe, and to marvel at the harmony between nature and the local people who have cared for this land for centuries.
Continuing our journey, we will arrive in the town of Ruteng. Here, we will visit Ruteng Puu, a traditional village that sits quietly in the middle of the modern town, preserving the ancient way of life of the Manggarai tribe.
As you walk through the village, you will see traditional houses with their distinctive cone-shaped roofs, still standing as they have for generations. Your tour guide will share stories about the customs, beliefs, and daily life of the Manggarai people. You are welcome to ask questions, take photographs respectfully, and feel the deep sense of history that surrounds you.
After exploring Ruteng Puu, we will take you to your accommodation in Ruteng. You will have time to freshen up, rest, and prepare for the afternoon’s adventure.
In the afternoon, we will visit one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world, Liang Bua Cave, also known as Flores Hobbit Cave. This is the very place where, in 2003, scientists discovered the remains of a previously unknown species of ancient human: Homo floresiensis, affectionately nicknamed “The Hobbit” due to their small stature. These tiny humans lived here as recently as 50,000 years ago, and their discovery changed our understanding of human evolution.
You are invited to walk into the cave, stand in the same space where these ancient beings once lived, and imagine what life might have been like thousands of years ago. Your tour guide will share the fascinating story of the discovery and explain why Liang Bua Cave is now famous around the world.
After a day filled with natural wonders, cultural discoveries, and a journey into ancient history, we will return you to your accommodation in Ruteng for a peaceful overnight stay. Rest well, tomorrow holds even more treasures.
Day 2. Ruteng – Bajawa (+/- 135KM) Around 5-hrs Driving
Good morning, Ruteng. A new day of discovery awaits.
After a restful night in the cool highlands of Ruteng, our friendly tour guide and driver will pick you up directly from your accommodation. Today, we will continue our journey eastward toward Bajawa, a town nestled in the shadow of Mount Inerie, known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
The drive from Ruteng to Bajawa takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. But as with yesterday, the journey itself is part of the adventure. We will make several stops along the way at beautiful viewpoints, where you are invited to step out, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and capture the ever-changing landscapes of Flores, from rolling hills to dramatic valleys.
One of our first special stops is Rana Mese Crater Lake, a stunning volcanic lake nestled in the hills between Ruteng and Bajawa. The water here is a deep, tranquil blue, surrounded by lush green hills and open grassland.
You are invited to take your time here, to walk along the edge of the lake, to breathe in the peaceful atmosphere, and to photograph the beauty of this hidden gem. Unlike more crowded tourist destinations, Rana Mese offers a quiet, almost spiritual experience. It is a place to pause, to reflect, and to simply be present in nature. Do not forget your camera. The reflections on the water during the morning light are truly magical.
As we continue our journey, we will stop at Aimere Village, a small community famous for one very unique craft: the traditional production of Arak Flores, a locally distilled alcoholic drink made from palm juice. Here, you are warmly invited to witness the centuries-old process of arak making. Local villagers will show you how they climb tall palm trees to collect the sap, how it is fermented, and finally distilled into the clear, potent drink that is known throughout Flores.
You may also have the opportunity to taste the arak, a small sip, if you wish and learn about its role in local ceremonies and daily life. Please know that there is no pressure to drink. Simply observing the craft and the dedication of the local people is an experience in itself. This is not a commercial factory. This is a traditional village, preserving a craft passed down through generations.
After our visit to Aimere, we will continue driving to Bajawa. Upon arrival, we will take you to your accommodation where you may check in, freshen up, and rest before the afternoon’s relaxing adventure.
In the afternoon, we will visit Mangeruda Natural Hot Spring, located in the So’a region, a short drive from Bajawa. Imagine this: natural thermal pools fed by volcanic activity, surrounded by lush tropical greenery, with steam gently rising from the warm water. The minerals in the water are believed to have therapeutic properties, soothing tired muscles, relaxing the mind, and rejuvenating the spirit. You are invited to take a bath, to soak, and to simply relax. After two days of traveling, this is your time to unwind. Let the warm water embrace you. Let your cares float away.
After a day filled with crater lakes, traditional crafts, and warm natural springs, we will return you to your accommodation in Bajawa for a peaceful overnight stay. Rest well. Tomorrow, we will explore the ancient villages and traditions of the Ngada people, a journey back in time.
Day 3. Bajawa – Moni Village (+/- 170KM) Around 6-hrs Driving
good morning from Bajawa. Today, you will step back in time.
After a peaceful night in the cool highlands, our friendly tour guide and driver will pick you up from your accommodation. Today is a day of culture, tradition, and the slow unveiling of Flores’ most treasured heritage. We will journey eastward toward Moni Village, the gateway to the famous three-colored lakes of Kelimutu, which you will explore tomorrow morning.
Our first and most important stop this morning is Bena Traditional Village, one of the most well-preserved and authentic traditional villages in all of Flores. Bena is not a museum. It is a living village, home to the Ngada people, who have lived here for centuries, maintaining their ancestral traditions, rituals, and way of life. As you approach, you will see the striking rows of traditional houses with their high cone-shaped roofs, aligned in two straight lines facing a sacred megalithic stone courtyard.
You are warmly invited to walk through the village, to observe the daily life of the community, and to interact with the friendly local inhabitants. The people of Bena are known for their warmth and openness. They may invite you to sit with them, share a story, or simply exchange smiles. Please remember to dress respectfully (covering shoulders and knees) and always ask permission before taking someone’s photograph.
After saying goodbye to Bena, we will continue our journey eastward toward Moni Village. The drive takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, but as always, the journey is part of the adventure. We will make several stops along the way at beautiful viewpoints, allowing you to stretch your legs, breathe in the fresh air, and capture the stunning landscapes of central Flores.
One of our special stops along the way is Blue Stone Beach, a hidden coastal gem named for the unique blue-hued stones that line its shore. Here, you are invited to step out of the car, feel the sea breeze on your face, and take a moment to relax. The beach is peaceful and uncrowded, a perfect place to rest your legs after the morning’s drive.
Once you step to the beach, the stones beneath your feet are smooth and beautiful, ranging in shades of blue, gray, and green. This is also a wonderful spot for photography. The contrast between the blue stones, the turquoise water, and the green hills is truly special.
As we approach the town of Ende, we will make a stop at Wologai Traditional Village. Like Bena, Wologai is a traditional village of the Ngada people, but it has its own unique character and charm. Here, you will see more traditional houses with their distinctive roofs, as well as ancient stone formations and ceremonial pillars. Your tour guide will share stories about the village’s history, its connection to the surrounding landscape, and the traditions that are still practiced today. This is a quieter, less-visited village than Bena — offering a more intimate experience.
After our visit to Wologai, we will continue driving to Moni Village, a small, peaceful mountain village nestled at the foot of Mount Kelimutu. Upon arrival, we will take you to your accommodation where you may check in, freshen up, and rest. The air here is cool and fresh, and the atmosphere is calm. This is your gateway to tomorrow’s adventure.
We kindly recommend that you rest early this evening. Tomorrow morning, we will wake up very early, before sunrise to drive up to Kelimutu National Park and witness the magical three-colored lakes as the first light of day touches the water. It will be worth every minute of lost sleep. We promise.
Day 4: Moni – Kelimutu - Maumere (+/- 100KM) Around 3-hrs Driving or Moni – Ende ( +/-50KM) About 2-hrs Driving
This is the moment you have been waiting for. Today, you will wake up before the sun and we promise you, every minute of lost sleep will be worth it. You are about to witness one of the most extraordinary natural wonders not only in Indonesia but in the entire world: the three-colored lakes of Kelimutu.
In the very early morning, typically around 4:00 AM to 4:30 AM, our tour guide and driver will gently wake you and pick you up from your accommodation in Moni Village. The air is cool and crisp, the sky is still dark, and the stars may still be visible above.
From Moni Village, we will drive approximately one hour up the winding mountain road toward Kelimutu National Park. The road climbs higher and higher, and with every passing minute, the sky begins to show the first hints of dawn.
Upon arrival at the parking area, you will begin your gentle ascent toward the summit of Kelimutu Volcano. A paved path with stairs leads the way, approximately 30 minutes of walking at a comfortable pace. Take your time. There is no need to rush. The path can be steep in places, but your guide will walk with you, encouraging you every step of the way. The cool morning air makes the climb easier than you might expect. As you climb, the sky will slowly transform, from dark blue to soft pink to glowing orange. Let that be your motivation. And then, you arrive. You stand at the summit of Kelimutu Volcano, and before you lies one of the most incredible sights on earth: three crater lakes, each a different color.
These three lakes — known locally as Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of the Ancestors), Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens), and Tiwu Ata Polo (Lake of the Enchanted), have captivated scientists, travelers, and local people for generations. Their colors change over time, from turquoise to green to red to dark brown, depending on the mineral content and volcanic activity.
On the morning of your visit, you will see them as they are mysterious, breathtaking, and utterly unforgettable. You are invited to take your time at the summit. Walk along the viewing platforms. Breathe in the cool mountain air. Take photographs, though no camera can truly capture the feeling of standing here. Watch as the sun rises higher, painting the lakes in ever-changing light. This is why you came to Flores. This is the moment you will remember for the rest of your life.
After you have soaked in the beauty of Kelimutu, you will walk back down the same path to the parking area. The descent takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes, easier on the lungs, but please watch your step on the stairs.
We will drive back to Moni Village (approximately one hour), where a warm breakfast awaits you at your accommodation. You have earned it. Eat slowly, share your photos, and let the magic of the morning settle into your heart.
After breakfast, we will continue our journey eastward, or if you are traveling in the opposite direction, westward. You have two options for your final destination:
East: Maumere, A coastal town on the eastern tip of Flores, known for its beautiful beaches and coral reefs.
West: Ende, A port town with historical significance and the nearest airport for flights back to Bali or beyond.
Along the way, we will make several stops at beautiful viewpoints where you are invited to take photographs, stretch your legs, and enjoy the final landscapes of your Flores journey, from rolling hills to coastal vistas.
Upon arrival in your chosen destination, we will drop you off at: Your accommodation in Maumere or Ende (if you wish to stay longer), or at the airport (if you are continuing your journey to your next destination). And with that, your 4-day Flores journey comes to a close. You arrived as a traveler. You leave as an adventurer, with a heart full of memories and a camera full of wonders.
Thank you for choosing to explore Flores with us. It has been our honor to guide you through this beautiful island, from the spider web rice fields of Cancar to the traditional villages of Bena, from the hot springs of So’a to the three-colored lakes of Kelimutu. Until we meet again, may your travels always be filled with wonder.
