Wae Rebo Village: The Charming Culture of Flores

Wae Rebo is one of the most remarkable traditional villages in Indonesia, hidden in the mountains of central Flores at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters above sea level. The village is home to the Manggarai people and is famous for its seven unique cone-shaped communal houses called Mbaru Niang.
The Mbaru Niang Houses
The Mbaru Niang are towering, circular thatched-roof houses that stand as the centrepiece of Wae Rebo village. Each house is constructed from bamboo, wood, and palm leaves using traditional techniques passed down through generations. The houses have five floors, with the ground floor used as living quarters and upper floors for storing crops and sacred items.
In 2012, Wae Rebo received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Merit for Cultural Heritage Conservation, recognizing the community's extraordinary efforts in preserving their traditional architecture and way of life.
Getting to Wae Rebo
Reaching Wae Rebo requires a trekking journey of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours through dense rainforest from the village of Denge. The trek is moderately challenging but the experience of arriving at this mystical mountain village is completely worth the effort. Visitors can stay overnight in the Mbaru Niang houses, sleeping alongside the local community.
Village Life and Culture
The Manggarai people of Wae Rebo maintain a strong connection to their ancestral traditions. Visitors can observe traditional weaving, attend ceremonial rituals, and learn about the unique Manggarai cosmology. The village follows a circular layout centered around a ceremonial drum house.
Wae Rebo is included in our 5D Flores Tour and 4D Wae Rebo Komodo Tour.
