Komodo Island Indonesia

Komodo Island is part of Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Indonesia's most extraordinary natural destinations. The island is famous as the primary natural habitat of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), the world's largest living lizard.

About Komodo Island

Komodo Island covers an area of approximately 390 km² and is home to both Komodo dragons and a remarkably diverse ecosystem. The island's landscape ranges from open savannah grasslands and tropical deciduous forests to rugged hills and pristine coastal areas. The surrounding waters are part of the Coral Triangle, some of the richest marine biodiversity on Earth.

Komodo Dragon Population

Komodo Island hosts the largest population of Komodo dragons within the national park — approximately 1,700 individuals. Guided treks with official park rangers allow visitors to observe these incredible reptiles at a safe distance in their natural environment. The rangers carry forked sticks for protection, though Komodo dragons rarely show aggression toward humans when guides are present.

Trekking Routes

Komodo Island offers several trekking routes of varying lengths and difficulty:

  • Short Trek (1–1.5 hours) – Visits the main dragon feeding area near the ranger station
  • Medium Trek (2–3 hours) – Explores deeper into the forest with higher chances of encountering dragons in the wild
  • Long Trek (4+ hours) – A full island circuit covering diverse habitats, recommended for fit hikers

Pink Beach

Komodo Island is also home to Pink Beach (Pantai Merah), one of only seven pink sand beaches in the world. The pink color comes from microscopic red coral fragments that mix with the white sand. Swimming and snorkeling here amid colorful reef fish is a highlight of any Komodo tour.
