Riung 17 Isles Marine Park of Flores Indonesia

Riung Marine Park, officially the Seventeen Islands Marine Park (Taman Wisata Alam Laut 17 Pulau Riung), is one of the most underrated natural attractions in Indonesia. Located on the north coast of Flores in Ngada Regency, this protected marine area encompasses 17 small islands surrounded by pristine coral reefs and turquoise waters.
The Seventeen Islands
The park consists of 17 small islands of varying sizes, each with its own character. Some are fringed with white sand beaches ideal for swimming, while others feature dense mangroves or rocky cliffs. The islands are surrounded by some of the healthiest coral reefs in Flores, with excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities.
Marine Life
Riung's waters are teeming with marine biodiversity. Snorkelers and divers can encounter sea turtles, reef sharks, rays, octopus, and an extraordinary variety of tropical fish. Giant flying foxes (fruit bats) roost on several of the uninhabited islands and create a spectacular sight at dusk as thousands take flight.
Giant Flying Foxes
One of the most memorable experiences at Riung is watching the colony of giant flying foxes emerge at sunset. These large fruit bats have wingspans of up to 1.5 meters and colony sizes in the thousands. They are found on Pulau Ontoloe and create a dramatic spectacle as they fill the evening sky.
Getting to Riung
Riung town is located approximately 72 km north of Bajawa. It is reachable by road as part of a Flores overland tour. From Riung, local boats take visitors out to the marine park for snorkeling, island hopping, and birdwatching.
