Bena Traditional Village Flores Indonesia

Bena Village is one of the most fascinating megalithic traditional villages in Indonesia, situated at the foot of Mount Inerie in Bajawa district, Flores. The village is home to the Ngada people, who have maintained their ancestral traditions and unique cultural practices for centuries.

The Village Layout

Bena Village is arranged in two parallel rows of traditional houses facing each other, with a central ceremonial space in between. This space is filled with remarkable megalithic structures including stone altars (bhaga), miniature thatched huts on poles (ngadhu), and ancestral stone tombs. These structures represent male and female ancestral spirits and are central to the Ngada belief system.

Traditional Houses

The traditional Ngada houses in Bena are built on wooden stilts with thatched roofs sloping almost to the ground. The interiors are dark and smoky from the central hearth, which is kept burning continuously. Families have lived in these same houses for generations, maintaining the ancestral way of life.

Ngada Culture and Traditions

The Ngada people maintain a complex system of traditional beliefs blending animism with Catholicism. Key cultural practices include elaborate ceremonies for births, deaths, and harvests. The most important ceremony is Reba, a new year festival held in December-January, featuring traditional music, dance, and ritual feasting.

Traditional Ikat Weaving

Bena Village is also known for its beautiful ikat woven textiles. Women in the village can often be seen weaving intricate patterns using traditional hand looms. These textiles are available for purchase and make wonderful souvenirs. The village is included in our Flores tour packages stopping in Bajawa.
